I found an additional well done site with speculation about Manticorian insignia and such. According to the site's author, his artwork ended up on the first edition cover of War of Honor, basically because it's so good.
I think I've decided on taking on a Lieutenant Commander rank for my character. I think I'll base the uniform on the Star Trek red and black movie uniforms with some minor variations. Rather than using the over-the-shoulder strap to secure the jacket (and display the rank) I'll use a number of snaps or velcro to hold the uniform jacket closed. The jacket will have epaulets which will be used to display the shoulder boards and to secure the beret. I'll, of course, have a black beret. I'll base the uniform, itself, on the one displayed on SuZilla's page with modifications based on David Webster's newgroup posting from Dec 23, 1998. Here is the evolving summary of my RMN uniform
What I think I'll do is create a Saganami cadet's duty uniform for my brother. I'm thinking a medium-grey uniform tunic modeled after the officer's uniform. The piping on the uniform tunic and pants should be red and the shoulderboards backed in a medium-grey with silver pips. The cadet uniform shoulder boards might have a trianglular pip for each year. I'm thinking that there would also be decorations on the front of the uniform for Saganami-specific awards and ranks such as high grades, high performance during excercise, cadet squad leader, and cadet class leader. The reason that the Saganami uniform would be similar to the officer's uniform is so that the cadet would learn to properly care for and wear the uniform that he or she will wear for the rest of his or her career. I'll, of course, compare the design with the Honor books and run
them past Mr. Weber, if necessary. :-)

Today I decided that I need a costume for next year's Dragon*Con. Since I like David Weber's Honor Harrington universe and since the Manticorian uniform could probably make anyone look good, that's what I'm aiming for.
